Moye Chen - Bio

Praised by The Cincinnati Enquirer as playing with “combined bravura and artistry” for his performance of Rachmaninoff’s third piano concerto with Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and by Frequent Business Traveler as “majestic and lyrical” for his recital at Carnegie Hall in 2015, Mr. Chen has performed extensively as a concert pianist in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Highlights of his past seasons include the concerts in the renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, Benaroya Hall, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, Sydney Opera House, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, the Mariinsky Theater Concert Hall, Petit Palau Hall, Joaquín Rodrigo Music Auditorium, Beijing Concert Hall, Forbidden City Concert Hall, Shanghai Concert Hall, Shanghai Oriental Art Center, and Shanghai Grand Theater; as well as the appearances as a soloist with the Mariinsky Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Beijing Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Sioux City Symphony Orchestra, Oberlin Orchestra, and International Orchestra “Virtuosos of Madrid”; Mr. Chen has also been invited as guest artist to play in Mariinsky International Piano Festival, Gilmore International Keyboard Festival, Deia International Music Festival, Beijing International Contemporary Music Festival, Shanghai Spring Music Festival, DoCha Chamber Music Festival, and Tongyeong International Music Festival.

He has collaborated with many world-renowned conductors and performers such as Valery Gergiev, William Eddins, Benjamin Northey, Nicholas Milton, Lorenz Nasturica-Herschcowici, Stefan Milenkovich, Tasmin Little, Kathron Sturrock, and Hung-Kuan Chen. During the next season, Mr. Chen’s engagements include the recitals in the United States, China, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, France, Australia, and Thailand; as well as the tours in Australia and China with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sir Andrew Davis.

Mr. Chen is the winner of numerous competitions such as the 11th Sydney International Piano Competition (Australia), the 58th Cincinnati World Piano Competition (USA), the 16th International Piano Competition “Spanish Composers” (Spain), the 8th International Iowa Piano Competition (USA), the 1st Berliner International Music Competition (Germany), and the 5th World Piano Teachers Association International Piano Competition (Serbia), among others.

A versatile artist, he has been awarded the prestigious Kate Neal Kinley Memorial Fellowship and Feltsman Piano Foundation Scholarship. Some of his live recordings have been collected in the album Encore! On the ABC Classics label. Mr. Chen is the exclusive recording artist of Universal Music, his debut album on the Decca Classics label is set for release in 2018 and draw on two composer-pianists who were both American émigrés – Percy Grainger and Sergei Rachmaninoff.

A native of Beijing, China. Mr. Chen earned his Bachelor and Master’s Degrees from Shanghai
Conservatory of Music and Artist Diploma from Oberlin Conservatory of Music. His principal teachers include Hung-Kuan Chen, Angela Cheng, Robert Hamilton, and William Heiles. Other teachers and mentors include Tema Blackstone, Alvin Chow, Cheung-Yu Mo, Yunlin Yang, and Xiaosheng Zhao.

Mr. Chen is currently the candidate of Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Illinois under the supervision of William Heiles. He is also studying with Robert Hamilton in the Phoenix area.
